Full description

A short walk from Verona’s historic cathedral, this hands-on workshop welcomes you into an authentic restoration laboratory where traditional craftsmanship is preserved and practiced every day. Designed for curious travelers and art lovers, the experience introduces the delicate techniques used to restore decorative frames and conserve artistic heritage.

Guided by a professional restoration expert trained in Venice, you will discover how damaged decorative elements are carefully rebuilt rather than replaced. The session begins with a brief introduction to restoration principles, explaining how specialists respect original materials while stabilizing and enhancing aged surfaces.

You will then move to the practical phase, focusing on the restoration of decorative frames. Antique frames often suffer from cracks, missing ornaments, or worn finishes. During the workshop, you will learn how these elements are reconstructed using traditional methods and materials.

The hands-on experience starts with the preparation and application of a restoration compound made with fine sawdust, known in Italian practice as segatura. This material is used to rebuild missing decorative sections. With step-by-step guidance, you will apply the stucco mixture to damaged areas and learn how to properly set it in place.

Once the material has been applied, you will shape and model the stucco to recreate ornamental details typical of historic frames. Using professional tools, you will refine the surface, carefully recreating relief patterns and decorative motifs.

The next stage involves filing, sanding, and smoothing the surface. This essential step ensures the reconstructed areas blend harmoniously with the original structure. You will experience firsthand how precision and patience are fundamental in restoration work.

Finally, you will move to the decorative phase. You will learn how restorers select appropriate tones and finishes, applying paint to match traditional styles. The workshop also includes the application of metallic effects, such as gold finishes, commonly found in classical Italian frames. This final stage reveals how color and light bring depth and elegance to restored surfaces.

Throughout the session, the expert shares insights into real restoration projects, helping you understand the cultural importance of conservation and the skills required to preserve historical objects.

This workshop offers more than a creative activity — it provides a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship behind Italy’s artistic heritage. By actively setting stucco, shaping details, sanding surfaces, and applying decorative finishes, you will gain a meaningful understanding of how art is carefully preserved for future generations.

You will leave with practical knowledge, new creative skills, and a unique cultural experience in the heart of Verona.
